Former known as the Francis R. Willis SPCA, Dorchester Paws has been serving the Lowcountry for 51 years, all of it in the same Summerville building. In 2025, the non-profit hopes to break ground on a new facility. Preston Hayden, the organization’s Director of Marketing and Development explained Dorchester Paws need for the new shelter and the capitol campaign that started during the holiday season to raise money to fund it.  Hayden shared the shelters commitment to being a No Kill facility and the challenges that has created. He also discussed the organization’s other needs including fostering animals and volunteering and their next major fundraising event, an oyster roast on February 1.

SEGMENT #2: Southeastern Wildlife Exposition
GUEST: John Powell, Executive Director
ISSUE: Tourism/Economic Development
The start of the tourist season in the Charleston area begins with the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, this year February 14 through the 16. For the past 20 years, John Powell has been the Executive Director of SEWE. Powell shared the growth of the Exposition over that time frame and talked about how wildlife art is still the center of what has become a wide-ranging event. Along with art, SEWE includes outdoor and wildlife events like the Dock Dogs competition in the Birds of Prey exhibition in Marion Square. Powell explained the partnership that has been created not just with the city of Charleston, but the surrounding communities, and went in-depth on the economic effect of the Exposition, sharing how SEWE generates about $35 million dollars for the Lowcountry.

SEGMENT #1: James Island Outreach

Helping Neighbors, Uniting Community is the motto of James Island Outreach, a non-profit formed in 1989 following Hurricane Hugo Jeff Gordon, the executive director of the organization, explained the main service they provide is a food pantry, open multiple days each week. James Island Outreach does provide other services, including their newest addition, assisting with home roofing repairs, which is also their biggest current need, looking for funding and expertise. Gordon spoke about being one of the few nonprofits operating on James Island and the Outreach’s connection with 27 local churches. He also provided information on their other needs and shared that the Outreach serves more than just residents of James Island.

GUEST: Pam Zanowski, Parks Marketing and Special Events Manager
ISSUE: Community Service
Dorchester County is growing, and beyond just new housing developments. The County will open a new park, the Pine Trace Natural Area in 2025. Pam Zanowski, the county’s Parks Marketing & Special Events Manager provided information on all of the Dorchester County parks and described what residents would find at each facility. Plus, she also talked about what the new park will include and when it should open. Zanowski also shared some examples of the programs the Parks and Recreation Department will execute in early 2025. In addition to giving an overview of the types of programs offered, Zanowski also discussed the county’s annual Park Pass and the benefits these passes provide.

Who is a good recruit for the U.S. Military? MSgt Everett Hopkins, US Air Force Reserve and TSgt Jeremiah Hust, US Air Force National Guard provided insight on that question and more. Both individuals shared their history of service in the military and talked of the impact that service had on their lives. Each of the men detailed what the military offers someone in terms of their career, while laying out the details of the benefit provided, with MSgt Everett providing specific benefits for the Air Force Reserve and TSgt Hust detailing specific benefits for the Air Force National Guard. The recruiters explained the requirements for enlisting, the commitment a recruit must agree to, while providing specific advice that included doing research on all branches of the military and finding the fit right for the individual recruit.

Delancey Street is a non-profit organization that provides a place to live and a program for men who have hit rock bottom and have decided to change their lives. Eric Meeks is the Supply Coordinator and an individual who has been through their program after having served time in prison. Meeks provided an overview of what Delancey Street does for clients here in the Lowcountry, from how individuals join to what is required of those individuals to complete the program. Delancey Street employs former inmates to a variety of businesses they operate, including one for the holiday. Meeks share the details on their three area Christmas Tree lots, and how the money raised from the sales is used to support the non-profit.

SEGMENT #1: MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital

This December, the 23rd Annual Reindeer Run, presented by Half Moon Outfitters, takes place in downtown Charleston. The run is a benefit event for the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital, the number one ranked Children’s Hospital in South Carolina. Dr. Mark Scherer is the Chief of the Children’s & Women’s Integrated Center of Clinical Excellence at the Hospital. Scherer participates in the run and shared his experiences in previous Reindeer Runs. Additionally, Scherer discussed when the money raised from the event goes, and some of the specific ways that it assists the Children’s Hospital.

SEGMENT #2: Pattison’s Academy
GUEST:  Dr. Laura M. Ganci, CEO
ISSUE: Children/Youth Disabilities  
Pattison’s Academy is a Lowcountry nonprofit focused on providing comprehensive, year-round programs to support children with disabilities and their families.   Dr. Laura M. Ganci, the CEO of Pattison’s Academy told the story of how the Academy was founded, and the four programs the Academy provides to the community.   The Academy itself is only open to Charleston County residents, but the other programs, including the very popular summer camp, is open to anyone in the tri-county.   Dr. Ganci shared information on all of the programs, as well as discussing how the Academy is funded, and how individuals can help, not just by monetary donations, but by volunteering to help.

SEGMENT #1: Big Brothers Big Sisters

For more than 100 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. In this area, the organization serves more than 350 children between 7 and 18 years old. Grace Hamilton, the nonprofit’s Development Director shared stories of those children and how being mentored is assisting them, and also the adults who work with them. Hamilton explained how both “littles” (children) and “bigs” (adults) become involved with the organization. The Lowcountry BIG Boil is their largest fundraising event of the year, and Hamilton provided details on the December 7th happening and how individuals could purchase tickets.

SEGMENT #2: Towns 4 Troops
GUEST: Rick Walls
ISSUE: Active Duty Military/Veteran Issues
Towns 4 Troops SE is a non-profit organization which provides support to active duty military members and Veterans in the Lowcountry region. Rick Walls is the local leader of Towns 4 Troops and explained the group’s mission, as well as providing examples of programs and events they sponsor. Walls talked about how he became associated with the organization and why he started a chapter in the Charleston area. For the holiday season, Towns 4 Troops is executing a “Santa For Soldiers” drive, Walls shared details on the drive and explained how people could assist with the drive, plus how the collected stockings are distributed.

SEGMENT #1: One80 Place

Each year on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving Day, One80 Place hosts “A Turkey and a Twenty,” the non-profit organization’s largest fundraising event of the year. Lara D. LeRoy is Chief Development Officer with One80 Place and explained how Turkey and a Twenty is executed, with individuals in the community invited to donate a Turkey, or $20 dollars, to assist One80 Place to feed the homeless in our area during the holiday season. LeRoy discussed the overall homeless issue in the Charleston area and provided her opinion on why the issues is growing, rather than improving. LeRoy detailed how One80 Place is working to reverse that and how they will use the money raised to deal with the homeless issue.

THE LOWCOUNTRY AIRWAVES HAS LOST A FRIEND

Charleston, SC (December 5, 2024) – It is with great sadness the Charleston Radio Group announces the passing of Mike Edwards, Program Director of WMXZ-FM, Mix 95.9 and the “Guy” on the top rated “Two Girls & a Guy” Morning Show.

Mike Edwards’ love of radio started at age 14 at a small community station in Pocahontas County, WV.  He came to Charleston as the Program Director of 95SX in 1994 and in 1999 joined the “Two Girls & a Guy” Morning Show with Brooke Ryan and Tanya Brown.  His career success took him to multiple markets but ultimately his love for the Lowcountry could not be denied. In 2014 “Two Girls and Guy” reunited on Mix 95.9 WMXZ FM with Mike, Brooke and Tanya and have been wildly successful entertaining our community ever since.

He was a multi-year winner of “Charleston’s Best Of” Radio Morning Show and Local Radio Personality awards and a huge supporter of the Charleston Animal Society and Charleston Pride Week.

Charleston Radio Group President Paul O’Malley shared, “Mike was an amazing person, beloved by his coworkers, listeners and our entire organization and will be truly missed by those fortunate to have crossed his path.”

THE CHARLESTON RADIO GROUP HONORED FOR GIVING

Mount Pleasant, SC (November 15, 2024) – The Charleston Radio Group has been presented as the winner of the 2024 “Giving Award” by the Charleston Chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA).

The Giving Award recognizes the work of any individual or company based in the tri-county area that has influenced a local nonprofit through its leadership and marketing service. The Charleston Radio Group earned the honor through the 2023 “Cares for Kids Radiothon,” which benefited the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital.

This two-day event takes place in the lobby of the Children’s Hospital, as WCKN, 92.5 Kickin’ Country, WMXZ, Mix 95.9 and WXST, Star 99.7 broadcast live for 26 hours, soliciting listener donations.  The 2023 Radiothon raised additional awareness of South Carolina’s top-ranked hospital and $170,901.23 – a 32% increase over the 2022 total.

In reacting to the award, Charleston Radio Group President Paul O’Malley commented “All of us at the Charleston Radio Group are honored and humbled to be a part of such a great effort that truly enhances the lives of these amazing kids. MUSC, our sponsors and our staff truly join forces for a higher cause and we look forward to 2025!”

The Association’s annual Spark Awards recognize the outstanding creative achievements of Charleston-area marketers.  Finalists are selected from each category and voted on by American Marketing Association Chapter Boards nationwide.
